Cristian Barcan is vice president and rural sustainability officer for Rabo AgriFinance. In his role at Rabobank, Cristian leads the rural sustainability and Carbon Bank efforts across the region and works closely with the Wholesale sustainability team, communications, innovation, risk, and compliance to integrate practices that provide data around stewardship, continuous improvement, and showcasing. Cristian also serves as the Rabobank Rural Business representative for North America on a number of Rabobank global initiatives and external stakeholder groups.
Prior to Rabobank, Cristian served as a Sustainability and Feed Efficiency Senior Advisor at Syngenta and spent 18 years at BASF as Head of Applied Sustainability in North America, South America, and Asia Pacific for the Food, Feed, and Beverages market segments. While at BASF, Cristian lead the implementation of the Beef Checkoff-sponsored More Sustainable Beef project with National Cattlemen and Beef Association (NCBA), rolled out over 20 corporate sustainability strategies for global key accounts, and introduced the company as a founding member of The Sustainability Consortium and Sustainable Brands. Cristian took that experience to Washington DC, where he created a branded sustainability program called +Vantage Vinyl for the relevant industry in the US and managed the Vinyl Sustainability Council.
